ANIMALS
These photographs are from my long project called Sanctuary, photographing animals at sanctuaries and telling their stories. I’ve visited many of the top sanctuaries in the country to capture the special individuality of animals in their daily environment, after rescue from tragic circumstances.10% of each purchase is donated back to the originating sanctuary.

HOME/LAND
In Home/Land, I explore a small valley where my family has lived for generations. People often joke that the valley feels like stepping back into the 18th century, with its small Pennsylvania Dutch population and surnames tracing back centuries. Between my departure for college and my return years later, the valley seemed to drift further out of time, with a large influx of Amish. The Home/Land photographs capture this unique, shifting community and how it has evolved, from the decline of anthracite mining to the blending of old families, Amish, and newcomers who telecommute. For this project, I use medium and large format cameras, printing both silver gelatin and color photographs in my darkroom. -

SLAVE DWELLINGS
Out of the tens of thousands of slave houses only a tiny minority remain. Almost all have disappeared leaving nothing but foundation stones behind. A few survived in the decades after slavery as homes for sharecroppers and other poverty level workers. Some have been repurposed as everything from rental units to guest houses despite cries of sacrilege and disrespect of their history. A handful have been rebuilt and reclaimed for use as educational tools. A scattered few are crumbling away in silence even now.
